There have been a few public articles in the last several months about the risk of grain-free “boutique diets” causing diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. Please take the time to read this article to educate yourself on what researchers are currently learning. Unfortunately, there have not been formal studies on this topic yet, and in fact it is going to be several years before a formal study will be complete. This means that our veterinarians have no more information about this topic than the public does. We have been recommending that owners do not feed "boutique diets" (smaller brand foods with unusual ingredients such as lentils and fruits) and stick with larger brand foods.  To be safe, we recommend reading the ingredients on your dog food before you purchase it to make sure that it does not include large amounts of lentils or other legumes (avoid these ingredients in the first 6-10 ingredients on the list).  Unless your dog is showing signs of heart disease (exercise intolerance, coughing, heart murmur on physical exam, etc), you do not need to worry.  An annual exam by one of our veterinarians is an excellent way to make sure that your dog is healthy and does not have heart disease.

Are you and/or your pet new to our clinic? Thank you for choosing us to care for your pet(s). We are excited to meet and get to know you! To start your appointment, we'll need some information about you and your pet. To save time and get seen by your veterinarian sooner, we have given you the option to fill out that paperwork ahead of time and bring it in with you

We have been recognized as a Cat Friendly Practice by the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Find out what this means for you and your cat.

The team at Westside Veterinary Clinic is committed to providing you and your pet(s) with the highest standard in veterinary medical care, along with compassion and understanding. We offer an integrative approach where applicable in order to give our clients and patients the most comprehensive treatment options.

We do not believe visits to the vet clinic should be a source of stress for you or your pet. Our veterinarians start with relaxing your pet and making them feel comfortable in the clinic. Toys, treats, and playtime are used to make patients feel at ease and happy. We feel this is an integral part in offering the best veterinary care in Flagstaff. In addition to offering wellness care for your dog or cat such as exams, vaccinations, and spaying/neutering, we provide high end diagnostics ( such as radiographs, labratory services, ultrasound, etc.), a variety of surgical procedures, acupuncture, laser therapy and more.
